Kayaking in Kailua
Last weekend, Luis and I finally rented a kayak and paddled out to some of the little islands off the windward coast. It was a beautiful day but there was some wind which made the task a little more strenuous than I had anticipated.
The situation was also complicated by the fact that Luis and I had competing theories on how to enjoy a day paddling a kayak. Let's just say that his paddling was a little more goal oriented than mine was.
The first islet we went to is called Flat Island and it was covered with birds called shearwaters. Some were nesting and some were just hanging around. Since hordes of people regularly swim or kayak out to the island, the birds seemed pretty accustomed to having two legged company.
After Flat Island, we kayaked over to a pair of islands called the Moka Luas. You can only land on one of the islands and it has a sand beach where we had a picnic lunch and relaxed. We hiked around part of the island and Luis took a quick dip in a a rocky pool called Queen Liliukalani's hot tub.
